Planning Your Salida Hiking Trip
Best Time to Visit
Salida's lower-elevation trails (below 9,000 ft) are open April through November. Alpine and 14er trails are best mid-June through September after the snowpack clears. July–August brings afternoon thunderstorms — start high-elevation hikes before 7am and plan to be below treeline by noon.
Permits & Regulations
- No day-use fee or permit required for most USFS trails near Salida
- Sangre de Cristo Wilderness requires a self-issue free wilderness permit (at trailheads)
- Campfire restrictions change seasonally — check InciWeb and USFS fire orders before your trip
- Dogs must be leashed in wilderness areas and USFS developed sites
- Leave No Trace: all waste out, including dog waste
Getting There
Salida is 2.5 hours from Denver via US-285. The nearest major grocery stores are in Salida itself (City Market). Cell service is unreliable on most trailheads — download offline maps before leaving town. Gas is cheaper in Salida than at Monarch Pass.
Local Tip: Altitude Acclimatization
Salida sits at 7,050 ft — if you're coming from sea level, give yourself a day before attempting anything above 12,000 ft. Stay hydrated, cut alcohol your first night, and consider starting with Ruby Mountain or S Mountain to test your altitude response.
Gear Essentials for Salida Area Hikes
- Waterproof layer — afternoon storms are daily July/August
- Trekking poles for 14er descents (saves knees on loose scree)
- Minimum 2L water per person for anything above 10k feet
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — UV intensity at altitude is brutal
- Printed topo map backup (cell service is zero on most ridgelines)
